Megane 3 Airbag Faults

Hi Folks,
Am hoping for a little help if possible. I bought a Megane 3 Coupe 1.6 petrol recently that was damaged repaired. The warning lights for the airbag and spanner warning light were on the dash - the guy I bought it off assured me it just needed plugging in and the faults clearing, as the airbags had been replaced and the ECU reset. Having paid for two seperate diagnostic tests it now appears this is not the case and there are three faults somewhere on the airbag system. Helpfully, both chaps who did the diagnostic did not have a clue how to fix the faults or even what they may be!! And of course the guy I bought the car off has stopped answering my calls!!
The computers say the current faults are
1. DF 004 passenger front air bag circuit 1
2. DF 005 passenger front air bag circuit 2
3. Front right hand inertia wheel circuit
The first two obviously relate to the passenger air bag, but any ideas what the problem may be please???
Any ideas what the front right hand iniertia wheel circuit is??? I though seat belt but that is inertia reel - one of the diagnostic chaps thought it might be drivers airbag/steering wheel related.
Many thanks, all suggestions welcomed having spend a fortune already trying to get to the bottom of this.

Welcome to the Forum Lee,

My guess would be that the airbag ecu modules were not replaced. On Renaults i believe you need to replace the airbag ECU module and not reset them. So the person who carried out the repair probably just changed out the airbags and assumed that a simple computer based reset of the AirBag system would solve the problem.

If it was as simple as a reset that the seller claimed, then I dont understand why he wouldnt have reset before selling the car, as this will lower the value further. I can only assume it is purely for cost cutting purpose.

I know that VW's airbag system works like that and you can reset them. i've reset the airbag computers on some VW's in the past. But as far as I am aware, Renaults need a replacement airbag ECU.

You should try and find out if these units were replaced.

Hope that helps

On the later models if the air bags have been activated the engine won't start so it seems some type of resetting or such has been carried out.
When this occurs both the secondary restraint system computer plus the ECU have to be reset or renewed.

Obviously the car won't pass the MOT when the time comes so technically the car is unroadworthy which in turn may have insurance implications.

Sounds to me like an unprofessional repair.

Note - apparently there are online companies who can reset the control unit.
