Hello, I am writing about a brakes problem on my Megane 2011 model. It all started in December when i realized the brakes pedal is a bit soft and it doesnt stop as it should be. After a visit to a local garage they said my rear back wheel was blocked and the pads were a bit rusty so they tood them out and cleaned them. I was told there is air in the front left wheel and they bled the system oldfashion way. After a week it was the same so it was bled again, and the same no brakes after 2-4 days. I went to a Renault dealer and i explained what is wrong so they bled the system and it only lasted 3-5 days again. The symptoms are. pedal getting soft when u press the brake pedal and if u try to stop in emergency only front right wheel locks the left one looks like doesn't stop. I went back to Renault and they said its the master cylinder. They replaced the cylinder with a brand new one and bled the system. Again after a week the same story again. Also I noticed when i press the brakes pedal a noise like air coming out sound like from the servo and when u pump the pedal few times the pedal not only gets harder but the servo makes strange noises for a while and then stops. I went again to Renault garage and the said the will pressure bleed this time, so they did and the car was perfect for 7 days. on the 7th day i was driving and i had t stop hard in an emergency and the abs on the car was working in order to stop and immediately after that i felt like there is something wrong with the brakes again. 4 days later i have again air in the same left from wheel and no proper brakes. They told me in Renault its probably the servo but probably yes may be not it costed me a fortune so far and even more to replace servo if I decide to. Please anybody with similar problem or a clue what is doing all this, is it realy servo, is it some air still left to give me an advice.

Old brake fluid can lead to spongy brakes. Especially if the brakes are being used hard.

Getting air into system.
Has to be a leak somewhere.
Usually a visual inspection will identify if a pipe or fitting. Give flexible pipes a really good look as the covering and dirt can obscure a minor leak.
Suspect any solid pipes that look bulged even if not wet.
Otherwise it's caliper seals or master cylinder.
If a decent leak it is usually shown by wet around the piston.
If, as in the OP, it always seems to be one caliper that needs bleeding, that has to be suspect even if no outward signs of a leak.

Hello I have a 2011 Megane dci and I had the same problem with the brakes feeling spongy, but only for one day, the next day my brakes completely failed (SCARY) I luckily had warranty and took it back to Renault who diagnosed a fault with the ABS chip. Once this was replaced I haven't had a problem with the brakes since. Maybe if your problem still exists ask the dealer to check the ABS chip also. Hope this helps good luck

Well.. i was at the mechanic 6 days ago. He said i had no brakes at all... we changed the brake fluid and let the air out and it was fine. The brake was "high" to push and working ok.

Now, 6 days later the brake starts working around middle of the clutch and not high as before.

So any other fixes, other than changing the ABS chip?

When you say the pedal goes down, does it drop under pressure,,try this test,,,get in the car dont start the engine, and pump the pedal until it goes hard,Hold your foot on the pedal, does it stay at the top and not drop ,if it drops under your foot pressure then check for leaks,,,i know you say your level is correct ,have you placed a light in the reservoir to check as some times its hard to see through the sides of the reservoir and it looks ok,,to check your servo, start the car with your foot on the pedal, you should feel it drop, this is the vacuum in side the servo ,does it now go down ,pump the pedal it should now go hard again ,stop pumping take your foot off ,press the brake again the servo should build the vacuum back up and your pedal goes down slightly,,,iF these tests pass ok then it would point to an issue with the abs unit (the part that carries the fluid )Inside are solenoids that hold the fluid and these are allowing the fluid to pass over them ,,,

I am currently experiencing a similar problem. Was experiencing soft pedal, brought the car in for a service. My mechanic of many years standing diagnosed worn rear discs. That plus the service cost €510, two days later soft pedal again. Gallic shrug from mechanic. Next visit to maindealer, €70 for a diagnostic. Their conclusion air in rear caliphers. System bled. Another 2 days soft pedal again. Reported same to maindealer, return visit for second diagnostic booked. In the meantime did a bit of research on the symptoms. No leaks apparent, reservoir full etc possible worn mastercylinder suspected. Sought advice from two other experienced independant sources who concurred. Several exchanges of emails with maindealer received two estimates. One for replacent master cylinder costing over €400 to supply and fit. Second worse case scenario faulty Abs pump? Part costing over €500, labour €900 + vat. Car brought in for second diagnostic, result, worse case scenario abs ****ed. To add to the woes I was given the wrong price for the replacement abs parts, it has now doubled. I went back to the maindealer to collect my car only to be told they will not release the car as it is "UNSAFE" to drive. The same car which not two weeks earlier was pronounced fit for use, by the same garage. It has been bumped to head office now because I am being considered a loyal customer (driving only Renault since 1993). I eagerly await the result of That(not). I have to ask the question was it legal for them to prevent me driving away from the garage, other than on a transporter. I had no indication on the dash of an abs fault at any time, and the have completely ruled out the master cylinder. Someone pass the vaseline.

It is legal to stop you driving an unsafe vehicle on the road so yes to that,, it can be transported away, they can not stop you doing that,

Was this the same garage that said your braking system was ok , though it went in for this fault, could have some come back there,
Hope one of the legal eagles on here,, picks up on this

they stop you using the phrase "they have a duty of care to you and others" mainly got to protect themselves as well as you ..fault may have also progressed from first visit

Hello, don't be fobbed off with technical terms that blow a lot of minds. Stand your ground if you believe you are right even if the top mechanic speaks to you.If you haven't already check out the consumer rights act online and get some back up in case you need it. If it does come to using the back up plan, don't loose your rag with them, This will be an easy way for them to walk away from the argument and leaving you with no argument. Let's know how you get on, good luck.

Thanks Swannie. Hard to stand your ground against a Huge corporate entity, they have a lot more resources at their disposal than "Joe Soap". I am glad its not America I,m living in, they have certain laws over there that would suit my mood right now. You are correct in saying about keeping my rag. "The pen is mightier than the sword" I am sharpening my Bic as we speak.

Hi All, have the same problem here! My car is an 11 C to and we are about to change the master cylinder. Any news about the issue. Don't want to bring it to :censored: as they have very been bad with service! Car is with my local mechanic waiting for a master cylinder to be delivered. They have been bleeding the brakes for nearly 2 months now.
