 Been getting a couple of problems with the electrics on the dash... here is what probs i got

- fan blower only works in speed 6 though it will work on any speed very briefly when key is turned once before stopping.

- clock/tempature display not working or at times comes on but very very faint (when it does work it is reset so it must be losing power/connection somewhere)

- when I apply brake my rear fog dash light glows, does not illuminate completley.. just a gentle glow.

It all seemed to come along at once, the fan blower was the 1st problem then it was about 2wks before the clock error and the glowing light.

Sounds like bad earth to me, any ideas? If im right where can I access the earth point on the car body?

Also changed front brake pads a few weeks ago, now im getting alot of squeeking from the front wheel/wheels, any ideas?

Thanx

Sounds very much earth related. Check the multi onnectors in the rear lights for the fog light problem. As for the others... I have no idea! A dim clock/temp display could be the little light bulbs hiding behind :)

I had problems with my 'coupe the other day!

car started fine, i drove to work fine! the car sat for 8 hours untouched! then after work before driving home i tryed to turn the fan's on for heat and windscreen wipers started working and no heat/air coming out the fans! then if i tryed the wipers on there own nothing happened! got home anyway mind.....

turns out behind the fuse box there was some copper piping that some how has got hot and it melted all the back of my fuse box crossign over the cicrcuit for the wipers and the heater!

required new fuse box much to my disgust - dont know wether your problem is anything similar.... dont hurt to cheak tho right?????

Start by putting an earth wire on to each light at rear if this makes no difference the light earths are fine that does NOT mean you do not have an earth problem though

just means you are looking in the wrong place !

I would go for the main earthing points ie
engine to body
body to battery
under dash area

Cheers for that, are there any other quicker tips I can try before that? Just to rules out the minor things.

All light do work, so it is not a bust bulb, checked wiring in rear lights, looks all good and neat

The mlti plug connectors tend to waeken their "grip" on the contacts on the rear clusters over time. Gently bending them back will incrase the pressure and therefore the contact between the two. A fine emery paper can be use on the plugs and contacts to clean off any corrosion on them. The best way is to rig in another earth to the lamp clusters though - it is almost certainly a bad earth here :)

It used to be an almost yearly job with the '95 Punto we had. Used to look like a Christmas tree at the back until you removed and cleaned the multi plugs on the rear light clusters!

The rear lights are definately down to a bad earth.

The fan is probably the rheostat.

The clock display is a bulb.

The clock display needs the top of the dash taken off to repair, which sounds like a nightmare job but is apparently very staight foward.(do a search and the info should appear).:)

The rear light earth needs to be replaced,as Bob quite rightly says.:)

I'm not sure where the rheostat is for the fan,but I'm sure it's on here somewhere........if you can't find it then I'm sure someone will and leave a link.:)

Hi not that sure on the Megan but the earth strap from the battery to the chassis leg your talking about i would say most if not all motor factors will stock them and if you look at your battery negative terminal you will see a wire strap that runs from there to the chassis leg,iam sure if you take the old one off and take it to the motor factors they will advice from there, are you sure that strap is focked if it looks good i would just check that it tight i hope this help you all the best Donald

Look at the circuilt boards on the lamp clusters, you will find one common path that goes to all bulbs on it. This is your earth. You need to connect a wire to this path, then the other end of the wire to a point on the cars bosy to earth it. Anything with a screw thread will do - mounting points for trim etc provided it is attached directly to the bcars body. You could self tap a screw into the body if you wanted. Ensure both ends are clean and paint free. This should sort it! Job done ;)

Please tell me its just a bad earth! (Updated)

Ok lights problem fixed, but I had to do a new earth fpr each side at the back.

Am I just unlucky there or did I do something wrong... not that Im too fussed because as I say the whole light issue is fixed.. just a query

Thanks all

aint got a solder'in kit so for now its just taped in the circuit board with insulation tape but its doing the job.Just having trouble finding the bulb for the clock/temp display.

Prefferably a high street store, I know Maplins do them but I dont have one near me and I dont want to go about ordering one, would rather just pick one up and do it.

I thought I might be able to swap with the "radio station" display (as this is not in use as I have a aftermarket stereo) but its a totally different bulb... but at least I saw how simple it is to get to with the dash off... marvellous

hmm, I did have a look on their sire but could not see them, I search their site for "dash bulbs"

Chucked up a few results but I dont think it was what I was after.

Might be worth me looking instore.
