Hi all,
Been looking around everywhere and couldn't really find a solution to this exact problem.
Bought a 55 plate 1.4 16v Clio a few months ago. Well looked after, serviced annually and spark plugs/oil changed and all the rest of it. 52k miles.
The other day the ECU popped up with the 'check injection' error message for a few seconds with orange spanner on the dash (accompanied from few minutes before by a somewhat funny smell which only happened this time, so might have been coincidence). Message soon disappeared along with the spanner light, then everything was fine again. Same thing happened over next few days, brief appearance of message and then the spanner disappears and everything back to normal.
The error appeared again today idling at traffic lights, revs went down (engine went into limp mode, first time this had happened). Like the ECU was constantly picking up the error again and again (and then immediately deciding there was no problem), the message and spanner light were flashing on and off, whereas the message should disappear after a few seconds but the spanner light should stay on. At first I thought faulty sensor or ECU, but then...
On the way back, had been barely driving for a few seconds before error appeared again, this time constantly. I pulled over and as I put the clutch to the floor the spanner light and error message were appearing and disappearing again slower as the revs dropped, as if every time the engine ticked over the ECU was picking the error up again. The 'check ignition' message did not disappear at all, again indicating that the error was being detected all the time. Then the toxic fume light started flashing as well, all of this continued for the whole journey with the engine in limp mode.
This has all been happening since the fuel level dropped below half, I had not driven the car before with this little fuel in it, but there is still a quarter of a tank so the car should theoretically run fine. I did read somewhere that it could be to do with the coil pack (especially regarding the toxic fume light), but overall not sure if there is an actual engine problem or it's just sensors going mad.
Also aware I will probably need to get the ECU codes looked at, but establishing if it's electrical/ECU related or mechanical would be a start.
Hopefully somebody can shed some light on this - sorry for the long post, just very confused and trying to avoid paying out of my backside at the garage!
Cheers
