Megane (55 plate) electric issues - what does the alarm look like?

Hi

Started new thread, as I was on the UCH thread before and someone advised me that I have fault with the alarm.

1st Question: Which bit is the alarm? I've removed the glove-box (which was surprisingly easy). Which bit is the alarm?

Other questions:

  • Is it easy to remove the alarm?
  • Can I fix it (dry out if water logged or reset it)?
  • Or should I get a replacement?
  • Is it likely that I have faults with the UCH and or ECU too? (problems listed below).

Many thanks in advance for reading and for the advice.

Problems

  • Lots of water ingress issues. Channels blocked with debris at one point resulting in water in cavity under windscreen (and at one point water coming all over feet/petals inside car).
  • Long running issues with alarm going off if the sensor is not disabled every time I leave car (pressing start 5 times).
  • Recent issue with hazards on all the time. Car starts okay, and drives fine. I have to disconnect battery terminal to stop hazards flashing.
  • Sometimes "card not detected"
  • Sometimes (when engine running, door open, key in slot) the car keeps locking/unlocking itself over and over
  • Sometimes when trying to lock (after hitting start 5 times) the hazards remain on (not flashing) and a load constant beep sounds.
  • 3 out of four doors electric windows no longer work
  • Large dents in both wheel arches (gender specific spacial awareness issue :d)

bump... :)

I've been looking around the internet to give some instructions on how to remove alarm - but can't see anything obvious.

My main task is to stop these hazards flashing all the time, so I've been told its an alarm issue.

Can someone help me identify which bit is the alarm please? (Is the ECU the alarm? I'm not sure on the terminology. Is it the metal box thing at top of pic below?).

Lots of water ingress issues. Channels blocked with debris at one point resulting in water in cavity under windscreen (and at one point water coming all over feet/petals inside car).

Not just specific to Megane or Renaults but almost certainly ANY modern car, of similar design, checking that the scuttle drains are clear should be a routine maintenance task IMO. Especially look for leaves. Remove ASAP. Can also test / clean the drains by pouring a warm water and detergent mix in the drain slots below the windscreen lower edge, e.g. on my Clio this should make a puddle under the rear of each front wheel arch.

Personally I reckon getting the interior thoroughly dried out might solve most of you electrical issues.

Thanks. Yeah I should have regularly cleaned out the channels.

I have the car under cover and off road for the moment as hazards are permanently flashing.

I intent to remove the alarm and fully dry it out and cross my fingers that it works.

I'm not sure which bit is the alarm at the moment though!!!!

The alarm unit is actually in the boot, behind the carpet liner on the passenger side. The connector for the alarm is somewhere under the glovebox in the picture you posted (you might have to remove the UCH).

The alarm going off might be faulty sensors, or, more common on these is the wiring is routed near the indicator wiring which apparently somehow triggers the alarm - these need to be shielded or re-routed slightly.

PS, if you find the connector, I'd appreciate it if you could post a pic of which way the loom appears from as I'm trying to locate it but can't find it....

Thanks.

The alarm going off was caused by the internal movement censors - had that for a long time and just got used to pressing start 5 times when leaving car.

The issue I have now is that the hazards are flashing all the time. Someone said it sounded like an alarm fault so I've been trying to track it down.

Now that you pointed me in the right direction I have completely removed the alarm. Doesn't appear to have suffered any water damage though. (I'll take it apart later to make sure).

I was hoping that removing the alarm would stop the hazards flashing - but it hasn't. How do I stop them flashing????

Also not sure what I'm looking for in the glove-box cavity. I'd love to just run the car without an alarm. But how?

Also I've removed the electrical board to see all the connectors to it, but still non the wiser.

Any recommendations?

Alarm connector (in boot)

This is looking in from the glovebox space to behind the cd player. Not sure what this blue connection is for:

Disconnecting the board (UCH?)

The board has a concerning pale section under the underside though:

I know the best way forward maybe to approach professionals on these matters. I am not such a person but if my car was suffering some of the symptoms you have mentioned in relation to the hazards being on, I would examine the hazard light switch.
Elsewhere others have suffered problems with the switches going bad, my '04 plate Espace was one such vehicle.
These switches have a few jobs to do in addition to switching the hazards on or off as required but also to reset an activation of the hazards after emergency braking activation.

Just a thought.

I'm not sure why the hazards are flashing, but it does seem to be a common alarm related problem on French cars. My boss' 307 had the same problem, but the hazards would turn off after a minute or so of flashing after the car was started. They would only start flashing after the car was unlocked or started - can't remember which.

Also, not sure clear on what you're looking for under the glove compartment, but if its the alarm plug, then you will need to follow the wires which run dow the passenger side sill. The connecter you're looking for should be a 4-wire connector. I'm trying to retro-fit my alarm, hence looking for the connector (apparently they all come with the connector - just a matter of finding it!)

Only because I'm assuming if all indicators are flashing, but no horn hooting, then it can't be the alarm, please tell me I'm right (about the horn)

I had very little hope that a new switch would sort it out. Found one on ebay for under £2.

After replacing it I put battery terminal back on and the hazards were still flashing.

My hopes dropped even further - until I pressed the switch. Success!

My locking issue must have been part of the same issue (same switch board), as both work like a dream now!!!!!

Due to historical water ingress I was convinced it was a bad electrical fault - but a new switch has done the job :)

:devil::devil:Thanks to all that took the time to post in this thread.:devil::devil:

Now I just need to sell it and trade up... anyone want a 55 plate Megane (52k, 12 months MOT) with a massive dent in the wheelarch? :) :d
