hi guys, first post here, in fact i registered to ask the following question.
Is the M9R Dci engine ok? i've done the googling and can't really find large forum discussions on it (maybe a good thing then).
I'm talking about the 150bhp version, fitted to a 2010 laguna III coupe.

I've been on the search for a next car for AGES. My budget is £6.5k.
Initially i was looking at bmw 320d coupes, then found out about the whole bmw 2.0 diesel issues with the engine fitted backwards and how the chain falls apart requiring the engine to be taken out..... and a decent 330d is out the budget, plus i don't fancy bmw parts/maintenance prices.

Then i looked at mazda3 2.2d's with 185bhp, only to find they too have some mental issue with the engine pumping oil into the pistons.

Then i looked at VAG FSi petrol engines (Golf/Audi A3), and they too have Oil consumption issues.
Every single car i've looked at has some crazy serious engine manufacturer issue......

Now i've finally found a beautiful car on autotrader, which ticks all my boxes, doesn't look awkward, has xenon lights, sports seats, fuel economy and some power (which looks like can be mapped to around 180bhp).

I'm hoping the particular engine doesn't also have some absurd manufacturer issue due to bad design........ can anyone advise please? This is the car i'm looking at

thanks

thanks, ive been googling M9R dci.
I'm also aware there appears to be a FAP and non FAP version...i'm assuming non FAP is better (i just hear bad things about DFP all the time...)
i think i'm going to go check the car out on saturday - how can i tell if its a non 'eco2' non FAP version?
Will the exact engine model number be written anywhere?
any visual cues that would tell me?

Just clocked up 152,000 today. Mine's low mileage. Seen 300K examples. Chain done at 143K.
Regular Servicing 9K Miles rather than recommended.
Yep Fine.

Main Clue 2.0L, earlier Diesels were 1.9L

2010 or younger I think would have a FAP (DPF)

Whether or not this is likely to be an issue depends a lot on what you intend to be doing.
Extremes are loads of long journeys, no issues
Couple of miles a day at most.... issues.

If you have the reg number, any motorfactor should be able to check, dealers certainly can.

i commute to nottingham and back 4x a week (60 mile round trip) so yeh, i'm assuming that should be enough to keep the DFP in check.... ?
weekends will be very small trips to the shops.

What are your thoughts on DFP removal or is that some kind of unspoken taboo on these here forums?
i'm aware of the MOT laws changing in 2014 so that emissions will be checked too, i'm not sure to what degree and will read up on it.

"LEGAL REQUIREMENTS AND THE MOT TEST
From February 2014 the inspection of the exhaust system carried out during the MoT test will include a check for the presence of a DPF.

A missing DPF, where one was fitted when the vehicle was built, will result in an MoT failure. A vehicle might still pass the MoT visible smoke emissions test, which is primarily intended to identify vehicles that are in a very poor state of repair, whilst emitting illegal and harmful levels of fine exhaust particulate. It is an offence under the Road vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations (Regulation 61a(3))1 to use a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the air pollutant emissions standards it was designed to meet.

Removal of a DPF will almost invariably contravene these requirements, making the vehicle illegal for road use. The potential penalties for failing to comply are fines of up to £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a light goods vehicle."

better not think about it then!

That sort of regular journey should be fine with DPF.
Short commutes in traffic or popping to shops and never getting engine warm for a reasonable period is the killer.
One reason why I went for petrol this time round, my mileage I would not trust a DPF to work.

Removal?
You've linked to official rules.
And mentioned emissions come MOT time.
And can be a fail if removal is obvious, as many were.
Pays your money, takes your choice.

Others may not agree but DPF technology does seem better now then was.

I run a 2dci Laguna(non fap) and performance is good reliability is bulletproof as long as serviced regularly..I use a local fast fit garage who does oil and filter for £47 (but a fap engine may be more) a good run will give you an average of 46mpg more if its all motorway ...think on the door oval plate it will say if its a fap engine

is yours also a laguna 3, 2.0 dci 150 variety?

your words give me encouragement.
I bought my 2002 mazda 6 back in 2011 for £3k, have had to spend maybe £1k in maintenance over 6 years, and the engine/clutch/transmission has been bulletproof. I've racked up 70k miles on it - i'm hoping i can repeat this experience of fault free motoring for another 5 years with this next purchase.

laguna coupe is the strongest candidate for my budget.... getting slowly excited. I'm just worried that it seems like almost too much car for the money!

i just called up my local renault dealer and they confirmed the car i'm looking at is NON fap.
I'm now torn between 2 models.

The non fap one is all the way down in surrey (i'm in derby) -
£5750, 66k on the clock, 2.0 dci 150bhp tomtom edition

and one that's very local, £6000, 49k on the clock, and its more power, 180bhp - but with FAP......
and it's the GT version, with a bunch of really useful stuff... folding mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror, no tomtom but i don't care about that...

is it a no brainer? I guess the 6k car makes far more sense but i'm just so worried about DPF.
I'm actually at uni (mature....) so even though I am currently doing 60 mile round trips on the motorway to uni and back, 5x a week, there will be periods during the easter holidays/summer where i won't be commuting at all, but will almost certainly go out at the weekend to manchester, or leeds.

Will 1 long motorway trip a week/every 2 weeks be enough, amongst the very short shopping trips, To ensure the DPF remains happy?

Sorry forgot to add mine is a MK3 ..the 2dci comes in various guises and a lot remap to get more out them ..to me the 150BHP is ideal...power to overtake ..Yes Decent fuel return ....Yes Reliability ....Yes

Did have RAC out recently for a faulty battery(I have battery cover) and patrolman says he is rarely out at these cars and if he is its due to neglect
