Had this problem on wife's O4 plate Clio. Took the pump off today and thought that it was different to the OP's description, but went ahead and dismantled the pump anyway. I needn't have bothered as the "valve" was in an external housing that takes the feed from the bottle and then out to the nozzles. I prised this off and shaved bits off the rubber and it now works fine. I thought I would let those know that if you have a "knobbly black and white housing" which has two tubes attached to it, you don't need to take the motor housing apart:d:cool: just prise it off. Simples.

yeah!!!!
I have just managed to do this and it works !! So chuffed with myself. Had to squeeze motor out as I couldn't get blades off... but little lady hands are good for somethings lol! Followed instructions and checked hoses were clear with bike pump before re assembling . Cant stop grinning. Thanks to all

Hey Guys, don't know if this has ever been posted before, but with it being winter now and I'll bet many of you are constantly washing your windscreen to get the grit dirt off from the road!

Recently I had a problem which seemed like a blockage with my windscreen washer pump - It started to go weak and then I got nothing what so ever out of the jets, even though I could hear the pump running!

So out came the screwdrivers and spanners!
(Still with me!!!!)

Basically - Once I had got to the motor and taken it out I tried to look how to disassemble it (It is Possible)

1) The section with the long shaft which goes into the washer bottle can be separated by using a large-ish screwdriver by inserting it into where you can see the gap and twisting the screwdriver - It is clipped on with a little lug too - so look out for that!

2) You will see the black and white plastic "Valves" where the pipes come out from - These too need removing from the pump using the same screwdriver method.

-Then-

3) Then the black and white parts need separating in half to expose the valve bung - You should be able to see the retaining lug, which needs a small screwdriver to lift the plastic over the lug - Then the black and white parts separate. (With force!)

Inside you will see a small silver plastic "Valve" which SHOULD move from side to side to block the opposite pipe that is not in use when the pump is running.....

This was the problem with my pump - The rubber within the silver plastic had expanded to the point where it was permanently blocking both pipes.

Basically I took a sliver of the rubber off each side using a craft knife so that the "Bung" could move freely when I blew through the pipe to test it, Then clipped it back together fully and made sure it wasn't blocking the holes when it was back together.

When it was all back together and working my jets shot over the roof of my car! Duly Re-Adjusted with pin!

Rough Diagram attached!!!!

:d:d:d

Hope This solves a few problems this winter!!!
This is fantastic :d , had exactly the same problem and it worked a treat - wiper arms a bit difficult to remove bit otherwise easy job. When I replaced the cover, the seal at the bottom of the windscreen has a gap at both sides and water can get through - does this matter much.

Many thanks for this excellent post, had exactly this problem and got it sorted by following the process - wiper arms a bit difficult to remove, otherwise straightforward!

After replacing the top covers, there is a gap between the cover seal and the windscreen at each corner, meaning that water will run in between the seal and the windscreen - does anyone know if this matters?

just to say a very big thanks to original poster as i has this problem yesterday just nothing coming out back or front. my way of doing it was remove the valve fine sandpaper on flatplate rub it both ends job done and water flying over the roof now but adjusted and wicked stuff.

I had a problem where the front window (scenic 02) jets did not work , but the rear ones did, The pump noise seemed good, and i had recently had the front d/s wheeel off ect ect and changed the pump so i suspected a blockage.
I used the rear washer to empty tank and then filled with hot water. Still nothing?
So after lifting bonnet and looking around i noticed a little bit of water seeping out of the bottom of bonnet lining,so pulled it back and inspected.
The washer pipe from the reservoir had perished where it connects to the small two way bridging connection just after the pipe reappears after going into the bottom of the bonnet. (bottom left of bonnet when upright)
I carefully cut a tiny amount of the plastic pipe back and squeeze the pipe back onto the connection and hey presto everything is good. Be careful ,there is not a lot of spare pipe so be tight with the cutback.

Just to mention again only use kosher bottled screen wash mix or concentrate with soft water, no soaps, washing liquid or hard water (because of the limescale, I live in a very hard water area [South East] so I only put in distilled water), but you can use a solution of (soft) water and meths (as an antifreeze).

HTH

Thank you very much for your comprehensive post. I managed to resolve my problem thanks to you. I was able to remove the pump from the bottle without removing the wiper arm or water bottle and then followed your instructions.
I would add that after I took slivers off and clicked it all back together it didn't work because I had pushed the black and white sections together too firmly. Next time I might check that first - separate the two and then put back together gently. Thanks once again for providing me with all the necessary info. You're a star! :d

I accidently pushed the rubber in the washer bottle. I had to get a wooden skewer to fish it out. I was trying to fix the pump as my rear jet does not work at all. I tried blowing it out with a air pump and it didn't budge.

Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can buy the Washer Pump Rubber Seal? While taking the old pump out I seem to have lost :(

I have a new pump and it works great but the washer bottle loses the water when I fill it as it won't seal around the pump head without it :(

Are you sure you didn't just push it in like I did? Or maybe it fell off near the base of the bottle? Have a feel around.
I've had a good look and can only see the white bottle :( maybe it's just pulled out with the old one but dropped down but it would mean removing a lot for a little rubber plug.
Has anyone got a picture of it so I can see what to look for?

Re: Thank You

Just a quick thank you for original post by jgildert and other subsequent contributors. Used for this system this morning. 20 mins job done. Well pleased

Hi,

Big thanks to "Jgildert" for starting this thread , also resolved my issue.
I have an CLIO II MK2, I had the same symptoms, jets started failing until nothing came out, I could hear the pump noise when using the jets.
My setup is pretty much what you see on "flymo66" pics (post on page 9 of this thread), however I did not remove the windscreen wipers , I decided to go check the Internet first :)
I was able to pry the pump out as mentioned by "Andrew Oz" (page 1 on this thread) and "alsmith" (page 2 on this thread) and it was very easy.
I took the pump back to the house to work on it looking at "Jgildert" diagram and I took some photos.

on picture 1 you see the pump after removing it from the car (and unplugging the 2 tubes , 1 for the rear jet and 1 for the front jet).
picture 1 also shows the gaps (in red) because I already had un-mounted it...I just put them together and did not fully pushing them back to take the picture.
Picture 2 shows the pump taken apart...I point to a part that I think it does not need to be taken off since the issue is on the black and white connectors.
Taking it apart was pretty much as mentioned by "Jgildert" , using the screwdriver method.

Picture 3 shows black and white connectors taken apart and the "Valve" that at this point I already had cut off a bit from both sides (2 red arrows below).
The valve goes to the white part and the white part goes in to the black. Like mentioned on Jgildert" diagram after putting it back just blow on any of the "pipes" and you will feel the valve moving from one side to another.
Picture 4 shows the bits I took from the valve, and also the little "lug" mentioned by "Jgildert" that I broke when separating the pump (which I think does not need to be removed).
I don't know if the "lug" goal is just to keep both pump halves aligned but I’m sure that it is not what it holds them together since I had to do a huge force to put them back together, I don’t have very strong hands so I really needed to man up a pushed until it clicked into place, I had to use that thorax trick where you set your hands in the position to push, get a good breath and hold it in and push at the same time until it clicks. After this ordeal I just rotated it to have it aligned where the "lug" used to be.

Picture 5 shows the rubber seal connecting the pump to the water reservoir (or "bottle" if you prefer). Mine did not separate when I pulled the pump and the pump come out very easy. I took out some antifreeze liquid with a hose, but not all...so when I pulled the pump some liquid fall of like also mentioned by "alsmith" (page 2 on this thread).
Picture 6 shows the rubber seal in place

Again big thanks to "Jgildert" and all who contributed to the thread.

I solved the windscreen washer not working problem using these steps:
  • Remove windscreen wipers. Remove the plastic covers, undo the nuts and then using WD40, a screwdriver, something as a lever point and WD40 eventually I got the wipers off. (Bruised and cut fingers).
  • Remove the two holding clips and remove the plastic cover.
  • Pull the pump out of the washer reservoir, literally just pull it out.
  • Put a meter on the electrical contacts and pull the washer stalk. (You need another pair of hands for this bit). I had 12V coming through. Okay so now I'm pretty sure it's the pump. reconnected the pump again and tried the washer again, no noise from the pump, so now I'm really sure it's the pump..
  • Removed the connector and hoses and tried to take the pump apart. This is not easy, I only managed to get the bottom part off (the bit where the hoses attach).
  • Inside there is a non return valve. Basically a plastic bit slots over a metal pin. I took that off and then removed a large rubber diaphragm.
  • That was as far as I could get taking the pump apart so then I blew down every tube I could find and pulled the metal pin up and down. I think that was the problem. The metal pin didn't want to move, initially but then it did start to move. Anyway, after basically fiddling around and blowing tubes and banging it I then put it back together.
  • Reconnected the electric supply and tried the washer and it made a whirring noise. Sounded good to me! reconnected the hoses and pushed the pump into the water reservoir and tried the washer. Success!
  • Cleaned the washer jets out with a needle because they were a bit blocked.
  • Reinstated everything making sure to oil up the wiper blade splines so that next time somebody has to take them off they won't have the problems I had.
  • Refilled the washer reservoir tank.
  • Job done!
