hi i have something the same on a scenic 2 1.6 16v on a 53 plate , the prob i have it it will start but wont carryon running i can hold the accelerator at 2000 revs but it keeps dipping and sounds like a bag of **** , rough as a badgers ass, i took the tdc sensor out cleaned it but no differant anyone got an idea as its driving me mad and so is my wife as its her car
I had same problem but mine was solved by replacing coil on spark plug, it had broken down inside, lt was process of elmination by using a good one and just working through all four plugs to find dodgy one. Did not show up on diagnostics. As soon as the correct one was found engine ran as smooth as silk

Wonder if this is problem with mine it a 2004 1.4 and car starts but then immediately cuts out. Had it to a garage who wanted to charge me £240 to fit a new part. Being just a mere woman I have not got a clue so so do you think the problem I the same and can easily be fixed.

When I had a petrol scenic(03) the only problems I had were Tdc sensor failed Rac man re-energised it and said renew it. Only reqiures 10mm socket and is easy to locate. The other problem were the coils on each spark plug, just a case of finding the faulty one or more. same again 10mm socket with extension.I got replacements of Ebay and they have not failed since over 5 yrs now. Hope this helps

I have just aquired a Scenic 1.6 16v 2002 with a similar fault. I am fortunate enough to have a friend that owns a breakers yard so bits are easy to get. I have changed the tdc sensor ( a new one had already been fitted, which tells me the previous owner had troubles). replaced all coils, two relays ( one I believe is the fuel pump relay ) and still the problem persits. There is fuel present but no spark, then try again and sometimes it will spark. I think there may be a possibility that the alarm system is at fault and the immobiliser may not be deactivating, stopping it sparking ( just guessing at the minute ). If I were to change this I assume I will need the ecu, key, coil from around the ignition. Is there anything else I would need.

As an addition. Today I changed the ecu, the box under the fuse box, the ignition key and coil. And it started, this was at about 2 this afternoon. just been out and it wont start again.

Finally done it. after changing just about every sensor I could find, including changing the tdc sensor and wiring to the blue plug. still it would not start, and then start. out of desperation ( before I scrapped the car ) I decided to change the ecu, bci module, key and transponder coil again. this time I used items from an ordinary megane ( 53 reg 1.4 16v ). A month later and the car still starts first time every time, and is used daily. Had the old ecu and bci checked at an electrician friends workshop and the immobiliser circuit seems to be at fault.

I have been having same starting Problems since July, today its in the Garage, and everything, including starting without problems, is ok?
I'm still waiting for the garage to ring back, to tell me if they have found out what the problem is. I will ask them to clean the TDC Sensor, as everything keeps pointing in that direction, from what I have seen on this forum site.
I will get back to you all, as soon as This is done, and let you know what the result is. Thanks.

I had a simlar problem starting my Scenic, even with a spare Battery to jump start, it was lucky if I managed to get the car started. it would even show signs of flat battery turning over with not firing up, and became a stressful task to start up. I eventually admitted defeat, and took it in to a garage, told the mechanic the symptoms, and said I'd seen forum reports saying once started the computer did not find anything wrong with the running engine. True the computer found nothing wrong. So I said Change the TDC Sensor, as the car was already there. Very fair Machanic, he charged me for the replacement TDC, and not the computer check.
We are Now into the 2nd week, and the cars started without missing a beat.
So follow the video and pictures on here (The Forum) or get the TDC changed first, as soon as you get a starting problem. I changed my alternator - Condenser plugs before seeing reports on here (forum) about the TDC. The Garage charged me £70 square. I must report that I still have a leaking into the foot wells of the car, thats my next problem to sort out.

TDC sensor is on top of clutch bell housing difficult to see because of pipes held by two 10mm bolts. Might need to remove intercooler pipes to get easier access.
hope this helps. Renaults have problems with connections .Try spraying all visible
contacts with electrical contact cleaner.DO NOT USE WD 40 apparently it leaves a sticky coating .Someone once told me EASY START was good for cleaning contacts but cannot confirm this...

I went through the following scheme of proof, as It seems the start problem is a bit complex, comprising many factors that should be thoroughly checked and verified step by step:
1) faulty ignition card 2) faulty ignition card reader 3) faulty start button switch 3) faulty starter motor 4) faulty brake start sensor 5) faulty electric power steering switch 6) crankshaft position sensor. 7) Battery condition

8) checking all the fuses contained in the fuses box for corrosion of terminals and ECU contacts.

Rarely, the ECU is the cause.

Good luck

Hi i have a starting problem with scenic 1.6, intumitent however it just clicks once when you push the button to start, no engine noise or turning over at all.its like there is nothing there. Then after a few swear words and attempts it will turn over and fire up.. totally random and unpredictable, it can go weeks but then does it again for a couple of days. I went in the garage after a short journey yesterday came out pushed the button, click - nothing. after several pushes of the button it eventually decided to turn over, once it turns it fires up
Ive read about the TDC sensors for the not sparking when the engine is turning over but this is slightly different do you think it could be the same thing?

approximately 3 months ago i had to have a new key card programmed as the key wasn't registering in the card reader, this is a different problem again.

Any help or ideas please.

Re: Renault - Scenic - Starting Problem

Sounds like either duff earth or duff starter motor. Common in cars of this age.

hi my first post so here goes mine is the 1.9dci dymonique (excuse spelling lol) has exactly the same issues as this i have no idea what can be causing it i have checked the earth cables and also tested the starter off the car seems fine works every time also the immobilizer is ok as the light is not flashing it seems to be worse in colder weather also have the condensation issue but that is for another day also when i have issues starting occasionally the central locking goes into over time locking and unlocking rapidly only had the car a few months and beginning to wonder why i bought it please help this bald man has pulled all his hair out.

My Grand Scenic 1.6 2008 has just started not starting. The starter turns well but just does not fire up. I had a look for the crankshaft sensor, using earlier posts as a guide. I could not find it though. I took the battery out to get a good view of the side of the engine and top of bell housing. Is it in a different spot on a 2008 model?
I called Green flag out and their mechanic plugged in the OBD tool. No fault codes showed relating to the TDC sensor, only DF014 which related to the card reader circuit. I'm a little bit sceptical though as I would have though if that was the problem then the starter would not even turn. I'm still erring towards cleaning/replacing the TDC sensor but would appreciate some help finding it.

Many thanks for any help offered

Jumping on the end of a thread will not get answers especially when the thread shows "Fixed" start a new thread with your issue and you car details also state if car is manual or auto

Hello, First time on any forum, thought I would contribute to help any other scenic 2 1.6vvt (2007) model.
Over period of months car occasionally would not start, finally the AA guy said crankshaft sensor - replaced this and car feels much better.
For about 2 years, it was lumpy to drive, when pulling away felt like clutch judder, or a massive flat spot - it's now gone !!.
Lots of confusion over which type, some websites allow you to put in your reg number, and give the part - most were wrong!!, mine is 2007 facelift model, the websites showed crankshaft sensor with two fixing points (looks like a little aeroplane), this was not the right one, this one had only one fixing point (10mm bolt).
If you have starting , juddering issues worth eliminating this as only £25

Hi there, i bought my Gran Scenic II 2.0DCI 150HP, 3 month ago and i'm having issues with the starting too, without any reason i arrive to a place and everything is ok when i came back press the Start button, hear the click from i think it's the immobilizer before start but after nothing, wont turn over, just silence....., press several times the button and nothing.
In one forum i read that after press start, change gear to second or third with the foot in the clutch, and for incredible that this can be one day desperate i tried and the car just start like i pressed start button again, i did this already with the second, third and fourth gear, because not always work with the second gear, but yesterday this gear miracle didn't work and i need to wait for 15 minutes changing gears with my foot in the clutch until he start again.
Do you think this is the TDS sensor or maybe a worn electric cable in the system, before i start to read the forum i changed already the battery and bought a multimeter to seen if the battery its charging, and everything was ok. thanks.

Neutral switch on your gearbox is faulty..
