Trafic power steering pump replacement and steering judder

Hi, I came to pull out of a carpark and my power steering had gone dead. I looked underneath and I was leaking power steering fluid from the end cap of my power steering pump which had popped off just a little. I tried tapping it back in but it was out for a reason.

I have replaced the pump myself as it looked pretty easy (and was) and I'm away from my trusted local garage.

The power steering now works but when I turn the steering wheel when stopped or going very slowly there is ever so slight a judder to the steering wheel. When at speed or not turning the wheel theres nothing at all.

Can you help?

When I put the new pump on all (most) of the fluid had leaked out. I just topped up the reservoir, then turned the engine over and kept topping it up until it was full. I'm wondering if I should bleed it?

Hi, thanks for the speedy reply.

Firstly I'm pretty happy with the aux belt as last year a garage replaced my alternator but not the belt and two days later the belt snapped, flicked up behind the timing belt and trashed the engine. When I was refitting the belt I checked, rechecked and then checked the belt again. I even turned the engine over manually to check it was running smoot and all seems well.

When I filled the system up I had the wheels off the ground and was repeatedly turning the wheels from lock to lock and the juddering decreased but there is still this residual juddering which is still there.

I'm glad to hear that juddering is a sign of air in the system rather than, say, the rack being faulty. I suppose just a bit more driving and lock to locking and it may work out?

Hi, so it looks like the juddering has passed with a week of driving (good call there). But....

Driving on a long journey today there were a couple of times when it felt like the engine was straining and underpowered and after pulling up a long hill there was a definite squeeking sound.

I'm wondering if the new pump is offering a lot of resistance to the aux/alternator belt and maybe causing the engine some extra load. I'd heard that a seized pump could actually stall the engine?!

Is it possible for the hydraulic circuit that the pump drives/pressurises can become blocked thereby giving a load of back resistance to the pump? I wonder if thats what made the original pump blow its end cap off?
