...................................I do worry that even though the battery is being charged at 14v (I currently have my multimeter connected to the cig socket as I drive), it may not be getting the current it needs.
While I have to confess that I don't know what "IT" is, you will have to trust me when I tell you that if the voltage is 14V as you say it is undoubtedly getting enough current ...................that is the basic governing principle of a charging system:nerd:

Just FYI, on modern vehicles with electonic regulators (and where incorporated into alternators for like the last 20+ years) the dash red warning light has no affect on the actual operation (unlike the 'old' systems), it's only an indicator and switched on and off by the electronics to show if the alterantor is running or not. This means if you got e.g. a bad charge cable or connection, lamp will go out but battery may still not be charging. Guess how I know! :surprise:

Hence my obsession ................. http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/17-electronics/563850-voltmeter-fitted-bat-alt-monitoring.html >:)

So I should of just put some tape over that annoying red light then :)

Thanks for that info, maybe no need for me to panic then. Well the light is off now and I did make sure all connections were sound. So think I will order a Voltmeter, at least I will always know whats going on then.

Cheers all!

Hi All,
Just updating this thread as someone may find it of relevance in the future. As mentioned earlier, the light on the dash stayed out after spraying some contact cleaner into the back of the alternator. The alternator was still pumping out 14 volts, so I left it as it was. 5 weeks later the battery had died, checked alternator and no output. Took alternator off (What a fiddle that was) and checked it over, brushes were fine but one of the diodes had gone. So decided to fit a new alternator due to the fiddle getting the old one off. So to sum up, even though the old alternator was (Supposedly?) still charging when the warning light came on, there was obviously something a miss. So thanks all for your help, it was much appreciated. I'm up and running for a little bit longer :)

Voltage is one thing, current quite another. Components sometimes only show signs of weakness when the load comes on and the heat does them in or you find that one leg of the three phases is not contributing.
A charging system quite happy at idle can fool you if we rely too much on voltage as a barometer of health.

Hi,

In decemebr last year I started to get a battery charge fault light on the dash but only every now and again.

After a few weeks the car failed to start one morning and battery would'nt charge. So I replaced the battery and all seemed fine expect the warning light still came on occasionally.

Now it is on almost constantly yet the car starts and drives fine. Had an auto electrician test it and he said everything is working as it should, battery and alternator output are fine and just bring it back when it has trouble starting but the warning light is really annoying!

So has anyone experienced symptons like this? Any ideas of what else could be causing it?

Thanks,
It might be picking your mobile fone up

I must have my dunce cap on this morning again ....................

So your phone triggers a DASH mounted warning light about battery not charging?...................

and on top of that makes the car not start?

Go on - pull the other one then! :devilish:

Don't think he was saying that, just turn off and re-start to clear light.

I seem to have a vague memory of one of our regulars (S2???) getting a low battery nag on the dash/media system which was either down to keyfob or phone batteries being low.
But not the Battery low/charging fault icon.

I simply cannot imagine how a phone would trigger a charging fault.

As you say - I also remember somebody reporting the same about a "battery low" - I just want to know what exactly the comment referred to and how it ties in here with the thread title :p

I know it sounds mental but I heard it on internet and it's true when I go to work fully charged comming home 50 or less on battery warning lite starts flashing for a while

Hello.

I have similar problem. The regulator has died, no charge. I replace with one that is exactly same. Now - alternator charge with constant volts allways (allready do 4000km after), but after 10min of drive allways does "LOW BATTERY", no exception. Is stupid and anoying, everything ok, but car too smart looks like. Is UCH or some other electronic need programme? Or some way to put tlhe warning off. Its a megane 2 dCi.

Hi folks.

Have this problem with my Laguna Coupe.

My Car wouldn't start so I thought the battery was dead so removed it and put a Battery from another Car in place but still the same.

Anyway it was a failed starter motor causing the problem but ever since changing battery I have the battery charging fault message on the dash but everything else is working fine.
