Clio 1.5dci, loud knocking rattling sound

We have started noticing that the engine is making a loud knocking/rattling noise. It sounds like a farm tractor, especially when pulling away and raising the revs to 1500rpm and releasing the clutch to pull away on a hill.

It doesn't really smoke, and consumption is good, but it does feel lethargic at higher revs.
It pulls cleanly from 1500-2500rpm, but has the immense rattling noise under 2000rpm. Over 2500rpm the car feels like it ran out of puff.

Could it be timing?
When we got the car, the engine ran very quite. Now, it sounds like a loud diesel. But there is a good 50 000km and 5 years between then and now.

So, how can I tell if the timing is out, and needs to be checked?

Without hearing it it is difficult to say,
but I would be a little surprised if it's the timing,
It could be a big end but I would suspect a injector.
really you need to let some one that knows have a
listen.

Could be the EGR valve sticking open, making it sound like a tractor. I had this problem on a citroen dispatch van & just disconnected & plugged the vaccum pipe which operates it with no ill effects. Don't know if the clio is vaccum or electrically operated though, my laguna is electric & if you disconnect it puts up the engine management light. You could try removing it & giving it a good clean.

The EGR on the Clio is electronic but its always worth cleaning it, if you unplug it after 2 or 3 starts you will get the engine light on and when it gets hot the glow light, but the car will run fine, if you plug it back in it can take a wile for the lights to go out, if the glow light comes on it will go off when you give it over about 1/3 throttle and come back when you lift off.
