Grand scenic III, change settings of automatic parking brake

Hi,
My parking brake works fine but the way it is setup is a bit odd. Imagine you park the car on an uphill. Because you are in an uphill the car will automatically set the hill brake on. Assume I do NOT engage the parking brake. I stop the car, take the key, leave the car and moments later the hill brake disengages and the car starts going down the hill without its driver. This happened to me and luckily the kids were not standing behind and I managed to jump into the car and stop it.

Now, I've owned a Citroen C4 grand picasso. It had and automatic parking brake, i.e., a real automatic parking brake. If you stopped the car the parking brake engaged automatically. Which makes perfect sense, why would you want it in any other way?

So, is it possible to change the settings in the hand brake so that it automatically engages when I stop the car?

Thanks!

Last year mine started to get a bit temperamental and not release when driving off sometimes. Problem went away when I fitted new pads.

My driver's manual states...
"The electronic parking brake ensures vehicle immobilisation when the engine is stopped and engine Start/Stop button is pressed. In all other instances, e.g. engine stalling, the electronic parking brake is not applied automatically. Manual mode must be used".

Mines an automatic too, it always engages the handbrake when I stop.
Why would your car roll away in park though buddy? You’re always supposed to stop and start the engine in Park.
Even in this cold weather I’ve been leaving my car with handbrake off and in park. The gearbox is locked and the car won’t roll away.
JPB, no offence was intended re the pressing of the switch. Believe me we get dafter things said on here buddy.
Hill start on mine is like 2dogs, I apply it manually if I need it and it comes off automatically when I press the accelerator.

Sorry about that, it was my bad! When I read it again I realized it came out wrong. I was just trying to make sure that the message was clear... on my mobile while trying to stop a 3 and a 6 year old from thrashing the entire place :)

OK my car is an automatic, but every time I press the engine STOP button, the parking brake engages automatically. When I drive off, it releases. Nothing else. On a hill, engine running, I have to engage it manually if I need to. I drive with both feet but the car actually prefers me to use the handbrake for a hill start, both in forward and reverse.

EDIT: Maybe I don't have a hill start capability - or it never worked (nothing in the driver's manual)

Davegayle, I mean PULL the rocker switch. I know how to turn it on and off. I am not accidentally turnjng it off.

Dancingdad, you got it right, "if hill assist kicks in because on a hill, the parking brake side does not apply automatically when engine turned off."

Thank you all for helping out!

Thanks for your prompt replies.

I'm not sure it's a design flaw or rather bad design. One could argue that one always had to pull the hand brake before they became automatic so the same applies, just in this case one must pull the button. For anyone not having a grand scenic, there is a parking brake button/lever that one must pull to engage the parking brake. It's not an "old lever but more like a small button.

The issue is that it is very easy to forget to engage the brake if when one takes the feet from the pedals the brake is engaged... except that it's the hill and not the parking.

So, it would be great if one could simply set it so that when I press the stop button the parking brake automatically engaged.

You would need to have the hill start deactivated, this is not a design fault..Hill start and parking brake completely different systems, used by the same computer
Hand brake applies the motor and a sensor stops the motors moving when stopped, and keeps applying force for when the discs cool down otherwise the car would be running away if left on a hill.
Hill start uses info sent over the multiplex system to hold the brakes on, from engine load, to someone sitting in the drivers seat, door being closed and not opened, and to allow auto release when clutch or brake pedal is released .
