Hi, could anybody tell me where the TDC sensor is on a Grand scenic 2005 1.6 vvt petrol. I have looked on the forum and found details for the older models and a rough diagram for the Scenic 2 but wondered if anybody could tell me in more detail the best way to get to it so I can remove and clean it as I am having intermittent starting issues.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Rich

Thanks for that Dichtung......what's the easiest way for me to access it....do I need to remove the battery and anything else.....I did read somewhere that on this model it is easier to access it from below.....any info would be great...:d

Decided to tackle mine today.
Currently when I start the car the EML and Service light go out but the Service one comes back on after a few seconds. I've already replaced the Cam position sensor.
Battery out, used a mirror and a light to locate it, access is awkward but not too bad, it could possibly be done with the battery still in but it would be a lot harder.
Took TDC sensor out, got new sensor and hit my first snag, the current one has a blue plug and the "new" one is black. I couldn't remember which was newer so modified the connector to allow my new sensor to fit.
Put it back together, battery back in and fired her up.
Service light didn't go out and LED said electronic fault, damn :(. So I took new sensor out and put old one back in, tried to fire her up and just a click like a dead battery.
Check battery connections and they were fine, there was a buzzing coming from the throttle body or nearby. I disconnected and reconnected the -Ve lead on the battery, same but it cleared second time I did it.
Fired her up then and same, service light stayed on. :(
Took TDC sensor back out, cleaned it with a wire brush, removed any muck on it, put it back, fired her up and the same as I was at the beginning of the day service light goes out then comes back on. :crying:

I gave up at that point and decided to change the washer bottle motor, which wasn't too bad a job.

I can't decide if the engine is running right or not, consumption is high 30s to low 40s which seems good for a petrol, the power is very linear with now feeling of a power band. It doesn't feel very fast but the speedo says otherwise and it will happily travel through town in 4th. It may be how its supposed to be, the last petrol I drove was a V6 Alfa which is a very different beast.

Did you ever find the sensor? I have been looking for the crankshaft sensor and can't seem to see it or feel it. I didn't want to take every apart before I know approximately where it is. Any help here?
Attached is the pic with the highlight of where I think the sensor is from all the post I read.

Is it closer to the back or the front of the car and how far down it is. Thanks for your help in advance.

Scott.

Hi all, just joined the forum looking for some help. I have a 57 plate 1.6 petrol grand scenic which is ticking over but not firing. All the forums i checked say its the TDC sensor and they all show the one with the metal strip and 2 bolts which i cannot find for the life of me (yes i have checked where it's supposed to be). After looking on euro car parts it says my car has 2 different fittings so make sure i choose the correct one. It has the normal one ( the one with a metal strip and 2 bolts) and it also has one with no metal strip and only 1 bolt. I found this sensor a bit further back from where the normal one is supposed to be, on top of the gearbox. I just want someone to confirm that this is just a different type of TDC sensor as i cannot find anything about this type anywhere! Thanks in advance.

explain ticking over not firing - do you mean turning over as in cranking over but non runner due to no spark? the TDC sensor is end of head /block area at gearbox end just above bell housing at 12 o clock looking over wing (front n/s if GB) battery will need to be removed unless you use mirror - find the thermostat housing end of head theres a wiring loom held / running across bottom 2 bolts of thermo housing under that slightly down and tucked behind is the tdc sensor, looks half moon shaped held on by to 10mm head M6 bolts

your yellow box is correct area but you can not see from top you are lookin below level of thermostat , IIRC below head gasket level at end of block above where it joins to gearbox bell housing it's hidden under wiring - mirror lights or remove battery - or (jokingly) put right rear flat to battery tray and look towards engine .... just trying to point out how LOW you need to be....

Yes the car is cranking over but not starting, i done some other checks for fuel etc. But came to the conclusion that it must be the tdc sensor as everything else was fine. The reason for this post is that my car doesn't have the usual sensor with the 2 bolts and its in a different place as its further back in the engine and is only held down by 1 bolt. I have attached a picture of the TDC sensor my car has. I just haven't found anything about this type of sensor anywhere as all the information on these forums is about the sensor with 2 bolts.

Automatic? that sensor Looks very similar to a 1.9 TDC which is under gearbox bell housing at 5 or 6 o'clock area. Having done both sensors on both types of car and a engine swap on a 2005 1.6 vvt (owned 4 or 5 scenics now)its going to be near flywheel as signals off a gap in flywheel teeth. - if you can gives us the info (minus vin) of your scenic from drivers door 'B' pillar sticker - something like JM0C (mines JM14) it will start with JM we can find correct part and location

if you can fill in your garage / signature in profile so we can be 100% sure what we are dealing with, it will help a lot

No its a 1.6 petrol manual which is why its confusing me as all the others i have seen have the 2 bolt sensor. The car is at my brother's house at the moment as it won't start and i wont be going there until tomorrow so can get the info then. I can give you my reg for now if that helps? I've only had the car for a few weeks as my last scenic died (cambelt snapped) so hasn't been in the garage yet.

ok do not always believe what motor factors list as a picture of the TDC (they may use a generic picture) IIRC you cant see the tdc unless using lights and mirrors - prety sure on my 2005 1.6 vvt i removed battery - undid 2 x 10mm nuts (or bolts) pulled the wiring loom off and up and there was TDC HIDDEN underneath.

Remove the Air pipe going from the airfilter box, to the inlet manifold/throttle body.. Get at the top of the bell housing/gearbox
Now follow the Bell housing/gearbox back, you should see it.
If its not there, find the two bolts holding the top part of the Bell housing to the engine, its in between these..

Thats the one slightly back from top rear Gearbox/bell housing . If he follows that rear top bolt back, he will feel the Multiplug

Looks like this ( Ignore this is a cam sensor , design is the same )

Or this design, again only look at the top part, as the cylinder part is hidden inside the gearbox

So thought i would add to this slightly old thread as it was very helpful to find mine too (on the back of the bell housing, i can just reach the TDC (Gran scenic 2 - 2008 1.6 - 6 speed box) from under the car with the lower plastic cover, and left wheel removed, however my question is do i need to drain the oil to replace it, as it feels very low on the engine.....and would prefer not to cover the drive in oil :)...

So for reference of others that need to do it... you can change the TDC from under without pulling out the battery etc (i had to drlll out a few bolts etc, gave up and put it all back together before saying one last try and found this thread... so you can unplug it from the top and check the new one has the same connector :) without moving the battery etc, the actual changing it , is a bit of a fiddle under the car but quite possible... i would advise taking out the old one, dropping it and inserting the new and fitting the bolt up in one action as finding the hole again would be tricky...
