Renault Laguna II - Phase 1 - Interiors - Sports Tourer rear tailgate switches - A how to + fix !!

 renault laguna sports tourer estate 51 plate. can anyone advice me if they have had any problems with their boot opening?
our boot keeps locking and wont open again with the fob, i have to climb inside and open it. the rear boot window is also supposed to open but the same problem with that. we took it to a local garage who told us that it was the boot motor, but when we took it home and tested the motor it works perfectly, the boot has now started opening sometimes but only when it wants to. any ideas or suggestions?

Excuse if I am teaching you to suck eggs here but...

You have to click the fob once to unlock the drivers door only and then click and hold the unlock fob to open the other doors and boot..

If that does n't work try suggestions below

had this with mine, remove the black switch from tailgate ,disconnect both terminals(can only go back together one way)clean the contacts with emery cloth/nail file /matchbox striker etc until its shiny then reassemble.
had to do mine again about two weeks later but this time had to "build up "the contacts with solder as they hsd burnt away due to poor contact and water ingress
allow 20 minutes
good luck

Laguna II tourer estate door

Hi
Wonder if anyone knows what the problem could be with the main estate door (not the window hatch) not opening when the switch is pressed?. I can open it manually with a screw driver by opening the window hatch and sliding the manual catch on the latch without any effort.

Thanks

This appears to be a fairly common fault on earlier Laguna II tourers - it is due to water ingress - if you can remove the cover and apply some wd40 type cleaner and "clean the contacts" with some fine wet/dry, fibreglass pencil it should be ok.

Apparently there is also a mod out which Renault have fitted to later cars to help prevent this and also if you go to a dealer with this fault on an older car they will carry out the mod. Unfortunately as yours is an 02 model it will be out of warranty - they will charge you. Try the wd40 and see how you get on.

This is what I did, when I had the problem

My car was a 51 sports tourer.

Problem:- Niether the separate window or the main tailgate would open, but all other doors opened Ok (therefore fuse = Ok)

Step 1 - remove retaining screws (if you can call them that) for main interior trim on the tailgate

Step 2 - remove the 2 boot handles, be carefull, i used a flat blade screwdriver to help.

The liner will then drop out.

Step 3 - remove switches and check for any corrosion, clean as best you can. Spray with WD40 or similar

Step 4 - re-assemble and refit the switches putting silicone sealant around the interface between body and switch

Step 5 - Try the switches.

By the way, along the same section of the tailgate as the switches there are already 2 drain holes (rusty). Not sure if this is the Mod referred to.

I would also avoid using a pressure was around the switches as a precaution.

I did this 6 months ago and have not had a problem since. :)

Hi All

Have had the same problem for ages, would take it all apart, seal it, put it back together, and it would work, until heavy rain. Anyway, finally have a permanant solution, the reason for this is water, but not as much ingress as soaking!

Above the two electic boot switches is a drainage channel which leads to a transparant plastic tube, when the bootlid slams this comes loose, and away from the drainage tube and therfore soaks the switches!

Simply reattatch the tube, and secure if possible with a clip, and hey presto, has worked ever since, even in a downpour!

Thanks

Hi,

I had the a similar problem, the main boot and glass hatch would not unlock..

I discovered that if I disconected the switch for the glass hatch - the boot would open.. I completely took the glass hatch switch aspart (carefully with a small screwdriver). Inside the switch casing I cleaned the contacts of the switch itself - all is now fine..

Hope this helps

Laguna tailgate problems

I also had the problem of neither the tailgate or the glass not opening. It turned out to be water ingress coming from the drain pipe which leads from the hole at the bottom of the glass on the tailgate. The pipe was just dripping water on the the wiper motor which ran down and dropped right on top of the glass opener switch inside the tailgate. This obviously was shorting out the circuit and stopped the tailgate from opening as well.

After disconnecting the glass switch the tailgate opens no problem. I also sealed the drain pipe on to stop the water ingress. I haven't tried cleaning up the glass switch yet to see if it works again - I've been waiting to see if it is definately the cause. After 3 weeks and some heavy rain I have not had any problems (touch wood!). Will try cleaning up the galss switch and plugging it back in!

I've attached a picture of the offending article, water gets in around the seal. Its easy enough to fix as follows;

1. Open the tailgate using a srewdriver to slide the small switch across next to the catch.
2. Remove the interior felt panel covering the the back door. (to get the handles of lever them out from the curved side, they then easily clip out).
3. Unclip the door switch using a screwdriver to lever it out.
4. Dry and clean it out and use a fine emery cloth to clean the contacts, you can easility see by pressing the switch which contacts are made.

Job done :d

Can someone tell me where the bit in XTRO's picture actually is? I have two black switches that I've pushed out from the tailgate (one for glass opening, one for boot opening) but neither looks like this. Or is the pic of a bit inside one f
of these switches?

I've had the same probs with my tailgate staying locked. I opened up the trim and found that the drain pipe had come away from behind the wiper motor and water had beenseeping onto the two switched mentioned above. I used some wd40 and sealant to keep future ingress at bay, and it seemed fine. However, 6hrs later I opened the boot to get something out, shut it and now find that once again it won't open.

Add me to the list of people with this problem. Gonna take a closer look over the weekend.

Is it possible to do all the above fixes with the boot door closed and sitting on the floor of the boot, or how do I go about forcing the boot door open if necessary?

Reading thro' this thread, there's been mention of using "silicone sealant". A word of caution, some silicone sealants designed for bathrooom and kitchen instalations contain a high proportion of amonia and other ingrdients which will react against bare metal so make sure if you do use them that they don't come into contact with unpainted surfaces.

I have a Laguna 2 V6 with the same problem of the rear window and tailgate suddenly not able to be opened. The central locking works on the doors and fuel cap, and the tailgate can be opened from the inside. The catch earth still operates the boot light, but crossing the switch wires does nothing; I cannot find any power to the central locking unit on the tailgate or the catch.
There is no corrosion or moisture anywhere.
Is power supplied from the central locking fuse? All fuses are okay
Any ideas anyone?

I have now had a chance to pull off the panel and check the wiring; the plug on the glass opener has 4 terminals, the middle 2 double wired. No voltage or earth on any wire, with the car locked or unlocked. I backfed 12V through each cable (risky) and lo I now have 12V on terminals 2 and 3. With the plug disconnected, the catch doesnt work. Plug it back together and all is well.
Interestingly, there is still 12V whether or not the central locking is on - so how does the central locking work on these catches?

I have just had this problem occur, it has recently been pouring with rain so i joined these forums and found all the answers i need. After cleaning the switches and WD 40 and emery cloth and all the other fix info my boot switches are working again, you are all fanbloomintastic. Point to note the gutter tube on mine was blocked, you must clean this and ensure the drain hole is free of dirt, it i am sure will only happen again if you don't. Thanks to all, you are->

Ok , thanks to everyone who helped on here . My glass tailgate is now opening . :d

Just thought I'd add that the black retainers that hold the tailgate inner cover on are removed by giving a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver , then pull the centre part down and the whole retainer will pop out .

Took me ten minutes to figure out that one , thought I was going to break them .

Hi
got a 2002 1.6 Laguna Estate with a tailgate which won't open. Tried all the above fixes with no joy and finally tried a different lock. When thid didn't work I checked back on the wiring and found that there is no power to the release switch. Doesn't explain why I can't open it from the inside but if I can find out where the feed to the switch comes from I might be a step nearer fixing it
